When experiencing health issues, going to the doctor should make you feel better. What happens when it makes you feel worse?

Spurred by her own experience with doctors who, for years, dismissed her pain, Grigsby was finally vindicated by a doctor who was a woman of color. Confirming her suspicion with a diagnosis of a shocking number of uterine fibroids. Grigsby shares her story as well as the stories of other people in the hope of helping others navigate through a health care system that seems to shrug them off.

Appearances

I have been featured on a number of panels, podcasts and more.

Coverage

In 2020, I published a book, EmpowerHERed Health: Reforming a Dismissive Health Care System, based on my experience of being dismissed by health care professionals when fighting a health issue in 2018. I have had numerous appearances related to the book, including a video detailing my story produced by Diverse Health Hub an organization committed to exploring the social determinants of health, increasing cultural competence among providers, and raising awareness about the roadblocks to equitable care.

“Umi is a survivor. From being threatened in her mother’s womb to becoming a respected legal mind today. A bona fide advocate for marginalized communities facing systemic racism and implicit bias, Umi shares her riveting story while simultaneously exploring story after story highlighting the intersection of ethnicity, gender, and race as an oppressive tool fueling health disparities in the US healthcare system.”
